Betsy Henderson is a mother of two and current Knox County School Board member.
Henderson is running as a Republican.
Henderson is an advocate for parents’ rights.
In March 2022, Henderson sponsored two resolutions at a Board meeting to reaffirm that masks are the choice of the parent and to insist all school activities resume as normal.
Henderson touts a “record of success” including “as many normal school activities as possible,” “an 8% increase in teacher salaries,” and “supporting resource officers in school.”
Henderson’s priorities include ensuring every child can read by third grade.
Phillip Sherman is a father of two and a professor of Religious Studies and Ethics at Maryville College.
Sherman is running as an Independent.
Sherman opposes HB266, which he calls a “censorship bill,” that would remove inappropriate content from school libraries.
Sherman says equity is an “important” and “challenging” concept and hosted a conversation about it on his campaign page.
Sherman promotes “teacher recruitment and retention” as a top priority.
Sherman says he supports “reform over punishment” for students.
